Pan-friend yams

Filed under: Chicago, Dining In, Drink, Recipes, Waverly — Ben @ 2:46 pm

Followed the recipe that Grace used. I made the following modifications: used yams instead of sweet potatoes; didn’t peel the yam; used fresh garlic; tossed more often to prevent over-blackening; used iodized salt instead of kosher salt. Click the photo to see the whole slideshow.

Tree house relocation

Filed under: Chicago, Family, Waverly — Ben @ 12:04 am

Waverly is getting used to the new position of her tree house. I think she will like it here…it should be warmer, and she can peer into the hall and the kitchen if she leans her neck out. It also demands more climbing…no more assistance from the fish tank or the futon or the window sill.

After the rain

Filed under: Baltimore, Dining In, Waverly — Grace @ 7:09 am

An abundant harvest.

I went to the Waverly Farmer’s Market today. It feels like the beginning of winter, but actually the harvest has just begun. It’s still early in the apple season. I got a nice spread of fresh produce for $11 (including a little breakfast treat). I will use the potatoes and ginger to make another round of curry. I just need to find some place that sells fresh meat. The FM had one stand that sold meat but I was intimidated by the lack of signage and I wish I could read instructions online about how to order the meat ahead of time. As for the apples, I chose gala apples this week even though they had 10 other varieties. I was worried they would be soft/spongy and I don’t like to eat those types of apples. They had honeycrisp, which are my favorite, and a variety that they called “early season fuji” but I stuck with gala for today because they looked fresh and I know what to expect regarding flavor. If these are good, I will try something different next week. I was worried that the FM in Baltimore is suffering due to the bad economy and the cold, rainy weather, but I needn’t worry. It was bustling and busy at 8 am on a Saturday morning. Lots of young people in their 20s-30s. I was pleased. Also, I finally ate breakfast on the porch this morning (haven’t done that since early August). A chocolate chip scone, 2 fried eggs, and a mug of coffee. It was cold and dreary still but fabulous. Now I’m off to school to do some stop flow experiments! And lots of data analysis. (Update at 7 pm EST: Gala apples are wonderful. Just ate one after a long Saturday at work).

Diggin’ thru the trash

Filed under: Dining In, Dining Out, Waverly — Grace @ 4:13 pm

We went out to breakfast at Wishbone this morning. They were very busy, but we had good service and tasty food–especially Ben’s homefries. Red potatoes pan fried, perfectly crispy with some kind of curry powder and awesome onions that taste like onion rings without the batter. I got the corned beef hash, which was kind of lukewarm. My scrambled eggs were delicious and the coffee was amazing! Ben’s shrimp creole omelette was very shrimpy.

Afterwards, we bought a Northern pike and a few fresh shrimp at the fish market on Fulton street. Afterwards, we headed to the Best Buy on Roosevelt (Joffco Plaza) to get a stereo cable and play their Nintendo Wii. We stopped by Kriser’s pet food store to get Waverly a bag of Serengheti dry cat food, a few cans of Tiki and Weruva wet cat food, and our new corn-based, toilet flushable “World’s Best” cat litter which smells a little funky (when soiled), but being able to flush it daily makes it bearable for me (and Ben says he doesn’t smell it).

As we were driving back into the Kinzie Station parking garage, we saw two beautiful pie pumpkins sitting next to the dumpster. I promptly jumped out the car and rescued them from an unedible demise. Now, they sit in my living room waiting for me to find the right recipe to make an awesome pie or bread (squash can sit around for several weeks without rotting or spoiling so I feel no rush). It’s my best dumpster dive find in the last few months!
